This document provides background about my technical
experience as a software engineer, and complements the information in my
resume.
I have worked successfully in positions from
programmer to manager. I want to find and solve problems, lead, mentor others,
and ship the best possible quality product. I have had a variety of stable full
time positions and contract assignments.
Here are some of my accomplishments:
General Software Engineering:
- 15 years in software QA
/ test engineering, following 15 years as an applications developer.
- Multiple platforms:
Windows NT, Win2000, UNIX, VMS and other systems.
- UNIX system
administrator for a 30-40 user software development organization.
QA Manager and Technical Lead:
- As QA Manager, doubled
the size of a QA department by finding and hiring the best personnel,
increasing the group’s tools and test development skills.
- As QA Lead, built a QA
department from the ground up.
- Supervised hardware
compatibility testing for NEC PCs and peripherals.
- Built a test lab to
test embedded software on networked medical devices.
- Familiar with QA test
methodologies, and passionate about supporting product development.
- Planned and led testing
activities, to coordinate with and support development.
- Performed the full
range of software life cycle activities in development and QA
environments.
- Wrote, organized, and
managed extensive scripting for test process control, and data reduction
and analysis of results.
- Used formal tools for
source control, configuration management, and release engineering.
- Released and deployed
software products across multiple media.
- Drove and promoted
standard engineering methods across QA and development.
- Utilized web technology
for managing, displaying, and delivering technical content.
- Worked closely with
other departments to meet schedules and organizational goals.
QA Engineer:
- Scripting experience in
UNIX, Windows, and VMS environments.
- Wrote application and
test specs, test plans, manual tests, and automated tests.
- Wrote and executed
unit, integration, system, sanity, and regression tests.
- Tests cover white/black
box, smoke, functional & bug fix verification, load, and performance.
- Test areas include
applications, networking & communications, web, client server.
- Wrote router tests
using the Expect scripting language.
- Tested networked
devices using TCP/IP, SNMP, FTP, Telnet, IMAP, POP, LDAP.
- Wide range of general
sys admin and configuration activities to support ever-changing test
requirements.
Other Accomplishments:
- Created a virtual
retail book business, and managed the website completely.
- Taught programming
languages: Cobol to MTSs, and Basic to college adults.
- Self directed exposure
to ISO 9000, SEI-CMM, and Six Sigma.
- Continuing self
training with Perl, C++, VB6, Java.
My experience covers every aspect of software development
and engineering, including software tools and application development, web
design and maintenance. I speak some German, have an MS in Computer Science
(less thesis), and an MBA in Management.
I have nearly ten years of combined management and senior level
engineering experience:
- As QA
Manager at Avanti Corp., in Billerica MA, I was responsible for developing
tests, hiring software developers, planning software releases, and
assuring that the released product was as fully tested as possible. In 13
months I doubled the size of that group, and guided software development
activities following a traditional engineering approach supporting both
software development and test engineering.
- I led a test
group at NEC for five years, where I planned PC functionality and hardware
compatibility testing, and assigned work to engineers and contractors. I
wrote extensive Foxpro database applications to automate the
transformation of results data into a variety of useful test reports.
- I served Wang Labs as Principal Engineer and UNIX System Administrator. Projects
included Workstation/PBX development, and software tools for UNIX/C development to
Motorola targets.
- Earlier, at Calspan Corporation, I served as Sr. Computer Scientist: (at Bell Labs)
supporting software development for voice/data telephony switch; defined development methods;
trained technical staff; developed C applications and tools in UNIX environment; (at MIT Lincoln Lab)
provided software development and tools support for radar applications; (at Calspan) developed
PL/I, Cobol, Fortran, and Assembler applications for fingerprint-based ID systems, image
processing, radar data reduction, and graphics.
Far from being just a manager, I keep my hand in.   I have:
- Cross platform
experience with UNIX, Windows NT and 2000.
- Contributed to custom
automated test projects, requiring extensive shell scripting (sh, csh,
ksh, bash) on virtually all the UNIX and Linux operating systems.
- Networking, TCP/IP
protocols, and router experience, and have used Expect to do some testing
in this area.
- Exposure to 3rd party
test tools from major vendors.
- Developed automation
for legacy products, and project management tasks.
I have high energy and I like to be hands on involved developing tools and
methods. I've written a lot of HTML
to support a web based discount book business, and I'm continually learning
more (example: I recently completed a C and C++ course at NH Tech, 80 hours,
grade is A). I'm process oriented, and comfortable with a structured approach,
but I also like to investigate new ways of getting the job done.
Thank you,
Manny Jasus
